James 3:1-12
Admittedly, there are many things in this life that can be feigned, not least those matters relating to spirituality. There are 101 different ways that I can give to you the impression that I’m “holy” and yet beneath the façade of public prayer, evangelistic zeal, generosity and commitment to religious duties, can be a rotten heart that’s a million miles away from God. All the above could just be one big cover up for what I really lack, namely a real, living, vital relationship with Jesus Christ!! Yet, there exists a member in the anatomy of the self-styled religionist that will give him away every time thus showing what manner of man he is in regards to personal holiness. He may at first give it the big talk, but just let him keep on talking and soon enough he will reveal what manner of man he really is by what comes out of His mouth. By a man’s words shall he be justified and by a man’s words he shall be condemned.
This sermon is a loving reminder of the pressing need to set a watch over the words of our mouth. It has been given to you and me to make war with this flesh and to bring our base nature to the cross, each and every time it seeks to exert its authority. It is only by doing this, that we shall master this unruly member through the life given us in Christ!
